Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin on the eyelids to rejuvenate the appearance of the face and give you a more youthful appearance.

Also known as: Blepharoplasty, Eyelid Surgery, Double Eyelid Surgery, Bilateral Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, removes unwanted sagging skin around the eyes for a more youthful and energised appearance.

As we age, our skin gradually loses its elasticity and this tends to be most noticeable around the eye due to the extremely delicate skin. This can create a tired appearance. Blepharoplasty gives a more youthful and tighter appearance around the eyes, with less excess skin and a reduction in under eye-bags. We offer both Upper Eyelid Surgery and Lower Eyelid Surgery to correct any aesthetic concerns you have so that you can regain your confidence.

Payment plans are available for the booking of all surgical procedures. For more information click here.

What To Expect With Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Hospital stay: Usually an outpatient procedure, Surgery time: 30 minutes per eyelid, Anaesthetic: General or local

Your surgeon is likely to recommend that you have a general anaesthetic for the procedure - which generally takes one to two hours. If you prefer, you can discuss with your surgeon the possibility of having local anaesthetic. This means you will be awake during the procedure but only the area around your eyes will be numb.

Blepharoplasty removes excess skin, fat and muscle from around your eyes. For surgery on the upper eyelids, your surgeon will make cuts into the natural lines and creases in the lid and into the laughter lines at the corner of your eye. On the lower eyelids, the cut will usually be just below your eyelashes. This means the scars will run along the eye’s natural folds, hiding them as much as possible. If only fat is being removed and no excess skin, the cut may be made inside the lower eyelid, leaving no visible scar.

Immediately after the surgery you may experience bruising, blurred vision and some swelling, this will go down with time.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Full recovery from cosmetic eyelid surgery usually takes around 1-2 weeks.

Complete rest will be necessary for 48 hours and pain relief can be taken. Surgical skin tapes should be left in place for 2 weeks. Wounds will be checked and sutures will be removed usually after 1 week. You will then also meet your surgeon again after 2 and 6 weeks post-surgery. Swelling will reduce after a few weeks.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Risks

You may experience bruising and swelling and externally visible scars. You may develop dry or itchy eyes. There can also be a serious, but thankfully rare risk of bleeding behind the eyeball, called a retrobulbar haematoma, which if not treated rapidly can progress to permanent blindness of the affected eye. Before your procedure, you will have a consultation with your surgeon during which you can discuss any concerns you may have.
