Michael Tyler is in full-time private practice. He left the NHS, after 35 years of service, in 2023 having been Co-Chair of the Division of Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care. Prior to this, he led the Plastic Surgery Department for 6 years and the Regional Burns Unit for 14 years. He is a member of BAPRAS and BAAPS and has been on the council of the BAAPS since being elected by his peers in 2018.

Michael’s experience in reconstruction surgery has been of enormous benefit to the quality of the aesthetic (cosmetic) surgeries he performs, as well as giving him a deep understanding of both form and function.

For the past 22 years, Michael has treated challenging and complex face and neck burn scar reconstructions as part of his work for the Stoke Mandeville Burns Unit. This knowledge and aptitude has been invaluable to his appreciation of aesthetic surgery to the face and nose and his practice in Facelifts, Rhinoplasty and some types of eyelid surgery.

Michael has extensive experience in breast reconstructive surgery, breast reduction and uplift surgery. He has performed over 600 DIEP flap breast reconstructions (which uses the lower abdominal tissue to recreate the breast) and this reconstructive experience has augmented his expertise in Abdominoplasty, as well as his skill in the art of creating symmetrical and shapely busts. Managing breast asymmetry and other congenital breast anomalies has also been a regular part of his work over the past 23 years.

As Clinical Director of the charity, Restore Research, Michael has clinically supervised 5 DPhil theses and 3 Masters degrees. He has co-authored a number of papers on a wide range of plastic surgery subjects. He is an invited speaker on managing stress within surgery including burnout and on value in healthcare. Michael has presented clinical papers on burns, breast, and facial plastic surgery, nationally and internationally.
