Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, reduces the size of large sagging breasts by removing excess breast tissue.

Also known as: Reduction Mammoplasty

Large breasts can often cause back and neck pain, affect self-confidence, and restrict certain physical activities. Breast Reduction therefore often not only improves the appearance of a patient’s breasts but also improves the patient’s quality of life.

Breast reduction surgery involves reducing breast tissue, tightening the skin and repositioning the nipple. It may also be possible to improve your breast projection. Liposuction may be an alternative solution for younger patients who only require a reduction of around one cup size.

Payment plans are available for the booking of all surgical procedures. For more information click here.

What To Expect With Breast Reduction

Hospital stay: 1 night, Surgery time: 1 - 2 hours, Anaesthetic: General

Prior to your procedure, you will have a consultation with your surgeon to discuss your desired breast size and shape. It is important to note that some surgical techniques may maintain your desired shape for longer at the expense of impairing your ability to breastfeed. We can tailor the surgery to your preferences. Your surgeon will remove any excess tissue through incisions on the lower part of the breast. Your nipples will be repositioned to fit the shape and size of your new breasts. The surgery will finish with stitches.

Breast Reduction Recovery

Full recovery from breast augmentation surgery usually takes around  4-6 weeks.

Swelling should reduce after a few weeks. Pain relief should be taken and surgical skin tapes should be left in place for the first week and replaced thereafter. Wounds will be checked after one week, with follow-up consultations after one month, three months, and 6 months. If you develop a temperature or experience bleeding or rapid swelling you must contact your surgeon or the team Berkshire Grove Hospital.

Breast Reduction Risks

Every procedure has its risks, yet these risks are largely minimised when the procedure is carried out by one of our highly experienced surgeons. After breast reduction, there will be permanent scars which can become widened, thickened or stretched. Wound breakdown can occur, causing delayed wound healing. There is a risk of infection, bleeding or an internal collection of blood (a haematoma) which can require a return to theatre for treatment. Breast reduction can impair your ability to breast-feed in the future. Nipple sensation may be increased or reduced, and there is a risk of nipple necrosis or fat necrosis. Before your surgery you will have a consultation with your surgeon during which you can discuss any of this in full detail.
